We are a local community charity run entirely by and for people that experience mental health challenges. Based in Selby, North Yorkshire we run a weekly support group and ArtWell, our creativite group as well as organising day trips and holidays for our participants.
We also run one off wide ranging projects exploring and supporting wellbeing.
We exists to enhance the quality of life for adults and young people across Selby District through sustainable engagement opportunities and quality relationships as they experience periods of mental ill health and engage in their own personal recovery journeys.
We are a voluntary organisation whose aim is to work with adults and young people across the geographic region of Selby District. Brighter Futures works with people who are experiencing or have lived experience of mental health issues. With experience of mental illness often comes stigmatisation and isolation and individuals may need support to enable them to develop confidence and self-esteem beyond their mental health. Being supported to access a range of positive community activities can give a person new opportunity, raise aspirations and self-esteem. Brighter Futures believes that consistent support from peers and engagement in positive activities can enable people to identify, define and engage in their own personal recovery journeys through and beyond mental illness.
Brighter Futures Philosophy
We believe that:
the focus should be on positive solutions that look to the future, rather than dwelling on problems of the past
people should be offered islands of time and space in which to build strengths and embark on their unique recovery journeys
peer relationships need time, trust and investment
peer support evolves from positive social relationships and should never be imposed
