This is where we began way back in 2009. As a group of people who were all experiencing mental health challenges, we were very aware that there were few opportunities for us to socialise with other people who shared aspects of our experience. We would attend our health appointments but then invariably return home to sit alone, an experience that often undid any of the good that the NHS provided. We decided to establish a social group that would meet weekly in a local cafe for a bit of companionship and support - Brighter Futures was born!
Our support groups are different and special.
While Brighter Futures exists for the benefit of people who experience mental health challenges, we put the emphasis on building social connections and friendship. While we know that our mental health can have a big effect on us, it's not the only thing that makes us who we are. Meeting up for a cup of coffee and maybe a slice of cake in a local cafe gives us a reason to get out of the house, meet new people and build friendships. This is a wonderful foundation both for rebuilding our own mental health but for also giving and receiving fabulous support when it's needed.
We believe that we deserve the right to enjoy time spent with good friends in a nice cafe and not be hidden away.
